Reto Messmer, born in Zurich, Switzerland in 1955
  • History of Art & Linguistics at The University of Zurich
  • Apprenticeship in antique carpentry and cabinetmaking
  • Apprenticeship in restoration, specializing in the restoration of antique furniture, painting and ceramics.
  • Studied painting at Freie Akademie Rotterdam, Holland.
  • Education in Baubiologie (the use of environmentally safe building materials).
Reto grew up in an artistic household mentored by his sculptor father. After a dangerous period of narrow escapes from romantic entanglements, Reto nearly joined the French Foreign Legion. Instead he hitched to Rotterdam and ended up in art school.

In his twenties Reto had many solo sculpture exhibitions in Germany and Switzerland helping build his artstic reputation. In 1985, he was commissioned by Migros, the largest Swiss corporation, to create a large scale sculptural installation at their headquarters. Another notable commission was a mural at the Zurich Stock Exchange. This piece was at the time the biggest mural in Europe, 85' long by 35' high, on canvas made specially for this project.

Reto emigrated to America in 1994 and has lived and made art in El Rito, NM, ever since.

Reto is also a highly sought after muralist and decorative painter trained in fine European restoration techniques. Reto has trained in Kung Fu for over 30 years in the legendary Ching Wu lineage. He teaches Kung Fu and Tai Chi in Arroyo Seco, NM.
